Getting to Know Computer Networks (PAN, LAN, MAN and WAN)

Today almost every computer we meet is part of a complex computer network. Let's say when a laptop or computer that was standing alone (alone) then we add a USB Modem so connected to the internet, then our computer is connected and is part of a very wide network that is WAN (Wide Area Network).

In the following article we will try to recognize the understanding of computer networks, the benefits and risks of computer networks and the wide distribution of computer networks are PAN, LAN, MAN and WAN.

What is a Computer Network?

Simply understanding of computer networks is the relationship between two or more computer systems through communication media to communicate data with each other.

Benefits of Computer Networking:

The main benefits that we can feel from the formation of computer networks is the ability to share resources (resource sharing) that we have such as the use of printers, hard drives, CD ROM and other peripherial simultaneously, exchange data (file sharing) and communication with each other (email, chat to video conference).

Computer Network Losses:

Actually the terms are not possible compared to what is meant by security (good virus) on the data being exchanged.

From the various risks we have to face, it seems to the computer currently connected or is part of a computer network is inevitable.

Types of Computer Networks

The types of computer networks based on the area coverage can be divided into several types of PAN, LAN, MAN and WAN.

1. PAN (Personal Area Network)

When we connect the computer or other devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, keyboards, mice, wireless headsets, cameras and other equipment close enough (4-6 meters) then we have formed a Personal Area Network. The most important thing is that in this PAN we ourselves are controlling (authority) on all the equipment. In addition to connect directly to the computer via a USB port or FireWire, PAN is also often formed with wireless technology such as bluetooth, Infrared or WIFI.

2. LAN (Local Area Network)

This is a very popular computer network. LAN (Local Area Network) is a computer network covering a small area; such as campus computer networks, buildings, offices, in homes and schools.

3. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a network in a city with high speed data transfer that connects various locations such as campus, offices, government, and so forth. The MAN network is a combination of multiple LANs. The range of this MAN ranges from 10 to 50 km.

4. WAN (Wide Area Network)

WAN (Wide Area Network) is a computer network covering a large area as an example of computer networks between regions, cities or even countries, or can also be defined as a computer network that requires routers and channels of public communication. The Internet is an example of this WAN network.
